Last night I attended a House Church. It was held in the home of an older couple from England, so that made it an experience unto itself. It had a slightly Dickensian feel to it. The food was wonderful -- most of it made from scratch.
The House Church was very interesting. For some people in the group this is the only "church" they go to. They call it it "simple church" going back to the way church was during the age of the apostles.
Coming from a Baptist background with some recent pentecostal thrown in, the subduedness of it all was all I can say "different."Of course, I will be going back because it was such a diverse group of people -- a guy who is shopping a screenplay, the British couple, my fellow coach friend from California, a very friendly guy in a wheelchair, a plain ole couple from Richmond, and then me. The common denominator is everyone's love of the Lord. So the lesson for me is that the love of the Lord doesn't have to be loud and pedagogic, it can be quiet -- but with the utmost devotion.
